Disability & Inclusion

Creating inclusive opportunities to help people with a disability be active

Being active can improve physical health, confidence and wellbeing. Yet in the UK, people with a disability are still less likely to be active, often facing barriers such as access, confidence, cost and opportunity.

We believe everyone should have the chance to move more in a way that works for them.

At Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, we are committed to creating inclusive opportunities where people with a disability feel welcome, supported and included. We work with partners and communities to remove barriers and make physical activity accessible for all.

Join Our Active Buddy Scheme

Active Buddy is designed to help disabled adults become more active, more confident and more connected within their community. The programme helps disabled adults by matching them with a volunteer “buddy” who can offer encouragement and support.

Adults can self-refer or be nominated by a friend, family member or professional. Once referred, participants will be contacted by Programme Lead, Zoe Ridler, to discuss how a buddy could help them become more active.

We then match participants with a volunteer based in their local area and shared interests. Buddies can support people to take part in activities such as walking, swimming, going to the gym or other activities of their choice.
The aim of the scheme is to make being active more accessible, enjoyable and achievable, while helping people build confidence and connections within their community.

How to get involved

You can self-refer, be referred by someone else, or volunteer to become an Active Buddy. For more information, please contact Zoe Ridler on ZRidler@sasp.co.uk
