Love To Pedal

Love to Pedal - Chair based cycling with virtual bike rides

This adapted cycling opportunity allows people to enjoy moving at home using pedal exercisers and a choice of ten to thirty minute bike rides that have been filmed across Somerset to bring it to life!

Ideal for older adults or those living with long term health conditions, Love to Pedal encourages people to move more in an accessible, safe and enjoyable way. Chair cycling has many health benefits whilst being an effective form of low impact exercise and therefore more gentle on the joints. This makes it a really good choice for people living with osteoarthritis or any condition where weight bearing may be difficult. Pedal exercisers can also improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen the muscles that help us to sit to stand and use the stairs effectively, increase general mobility, support weight management and improve circulation and related conditions.

Care Homes

SASP secured funding to support 54 care homes across Somerset with the Love to Pedal opportunity. Pedal cycles have been distributed far and wide across Somerset to provide residents with the chance to try something new, to increase their physical activity levels whilst perhaps sparking some happy memories from the rides they have completed.

Here are some of the lovely comments about Love to Pedal from Sunningdale Lodge, Yeovil...

''Residents feel a sense of achievement after using them. Lots of smiles can be seen and they are a good conversation starter. It's positive to bring residents together, we always have a giggle getting them started and showing how to use.'' - Activity Co-ordinator

''The pedals keep me fit and make me feel better'' - Anne

''They keep my legs strong'' - Betty

''Reminds me of riding a bike when I was small'' - Heather

''They stopped my achy legs'' - Maureen

Individual Love to Pedal

SASP is working with a number of partners across Somerset to reach those most impacted by Covid-19 to offer the Love to Pedal at home opportunity. Partner organisations include Primary Care Networks (PCNs) who host Health Coaches supporting people one to one and in groups across Somerset, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, the Stroke Service, Village Agents, Occupational Therapy at Musgrove Park Hospital and Integrated Rehabilitation Therapy teams.

A number of pedal exercisers are available for you or a family member to loan for six weeks alongside our virtual bike rides. Our rides can be accessed through the below links, via the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership YouTube Channel or a DVD can be requested should this be the preferred option. A participant pack accompanies the pedals and provides all the information needed to get started and to enjoy the experience. There's even a set of weekly record cards to monitor and track progress because goal setting can be really helpful when re-starting any form of physical activity.

SASP's Love to Pedal at home opportunity can be enjoyed through this loan scheme but it can also be enjoyed by anyone with a pedal exerciser or static exercise bike at home who is able to access the rides via a smart TV, laptop, tablet or phone for example. Being able to virtually cycle along in Somerset countryside (that may otherwise be inaccessible), can provide people with a sense of familiarity, motivation and perhaps spark some fond memories also.

Some feed back from people so far...

''I was given my pedals as I don't own a bike but needed to exercise my legs as i'd been immobile through illness for most of last year. SASP was very helpful and I found the pedals easy to use and I generally pedaled as I watched the TV. I'm very grateful for the help I have received and anyone considering getting a set, I would definitely recommend!'' - Sheila

''Some days when the weather was poor and lockdown was hard, it was useful to pedal. It proved to be a useful physical outlet and great for emotional wellbeing too'' - Carol

''Love to Pedal improved my overall mobility, particularly my arms as I would often place them on the table and use. I am active every day now!'' - Brian

Pedals are available for loan from our offices in Wellington. To express an interest, please contact SASP either on (01823) 653990 or by emailing
