Love To Pedal

Love to Pedal - Chair based cycling with virtual bike rides

This adapted cycling opportunity allows people to enjoy moving at home using pedal exercisers and a choice of ten to thirty minute bike rides that have been filmed across Somerset to bring it to life!

Ideal for older adults or those living with long term health conditions, Love to Pedal encourages people to move more in an accessible, safe and enjoyable way. Chair cycling has many health benefits whilst being an effective form of low impact exercise and therefore more gentle on the joints. This makes it a really good choice for people living with osteoarthritis or any condition where weight bearing may be difficult. Pedal exercisers can also improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen the muscles that help us to sit to stand and use the stairs effectively, increase general mobility, support weight management and improve circulation and related conditions.

Care Homes

SASP secured funding to support 54 care homes across Somerset with the Love to Pedal opportunity. Pedal cycles have been distributed far and wide across Somerset to provide residents with the chance to try something new, to increase their physical activity levels whilst perhaps sparking some happy memories from the rides they have completed.

Individual Love to Pedal

SASP will shortly be launching a community based individual offer for Love to Pedal.

Pedal exercisers can be loaned for six weeks for home use and rides accessed below, via the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership YouTube Channel or a DVD can be requested should this be the preferred option. A participant pack will accompany the pedals and provide all the information needed to get started and to enjoy the experience. There's even a set of weekly record cards to monitor and track progress because goal setting can be really helpful when re-starting any form of physical activity.

If at the end of the six weeks, Love to Pedal has helped individuals to feel the benefits of chair cycling at home, there will be the opportunity to purchase the pedals directly from SASP for a small cost. Funds raised will go towards purchasing more pedals so SASP can continue encouraging more people to stay well at home through Covid-19 and beyond.

So if you, a relative or neighbour has been negatively impacted by Covid-19 and are looking for inspiration around moving more in a way that is gentle on the joints, simple to set up and enjoyable to follow, please complete our enquiry form to register an interest.
