Jump Start Leadership
Jump Start Leadership supports 14-18 year olds by providing them with an opportunity to volunteer within the Jump Start Clubs, gaining experience of leading activities, taking responsibility for others and what is involved in running a club, with the opportunity to gain a qualification that could help increase their self esteem, life skills and ultimately their job prospects. In partnership with Bridgwater and Taunton College we provide those Jump Start Leaders who would like an opportunity to gain a qualification a 1st4Sport Level 1 Award for Activators (Multiskills).
Case Study
Frasier started our Bridgwater Jump Start Club in 2019 and very quickly expressed his enjoyment by returning every week unless he was ill. He quickly felt comfortable at the sessions and his confidence grew, allowing him to support others if they needed it and often collect equipment in without being asked. Over time it was clear that he enjoyed these new skills he was developing and after a conversation with him about leadership he was very keen to develop them more and took on more of a leadership role. He would take the register, set up the equipment, take some group activities and also take the warmup.
Frasier was part of the first cohort of Jump Start young people to complete the leadership qualification that we do in partnership with Bridgwater and Taunton College. Over the two days Frasier was able to display with confidence qualities of a leader and gained the qualification.
Following on from the amazing experience Frasier was keen to do some volunteering to gain more experience helping other and so when an opportunity came up to help on the SASP Inclusion Programme summer activities he jumped at the chance and did an amazing job.
Since then, Frasier has been helping out weekly at the Jump Start Club and has recently spoke at a Step into Sport festival as a young role model.
