Jump Start - Community Resilience

We strongly believe in the importance and value of sport and physical activity and how it has the potential to transform lives. Not only can it empower communities as a whole, it can give individuals the life skills, aspirations and experiences they need to nurture stronger self esteem. We hope that through our Jump Start programme we will be able to help many more vulnerable young people in Somerset to do this.

Jump Start Clubs

Jump Start Clubs is a programme supporting young people aged 8 -14 years old whom may have chaotic home lives, struggle to stay in school or may be known to the police. We provide them with weekly activity sessions, in a supported environment where they feel safe and valued and have a voice - the young people are able to shape how the club is run, better understand the impacts of their behaviours and feel included. The sessions are an important positive opportunity for building life skills that allow them to better cope with daily life challenges.

Jump Start Mentors

Jump Start Mentors also supports young people aged 8 -18 years old who may have chaotic home lives, struggle to stay in school or may be known to the police. The programme will introduce young people to physically active provision in sports through linking with sports clubs, or other active youth sessions with the aim of them becoming part of that club. Initially they will work 1:1 with a sports mentor and then with a trained volunteer within the chosen sports club.

Jump Start Leadership

Jump Start Leadership supports 14-18 year olds by providing them with an opportunity to volunteer within the Jump Start Clubs, gaining experience of leading activities, taking responsibility for others and what is involved in running a club, with the opportunity to gain a qualification that could help increase their self esteem, life skills and ultimately their job prospects.

The benefits of the Jump Start programme to young people are:

  • Improved confidence and self esteem
  • Development of new skills
  • Being active
  • Increased aspirations
  • Feeling part of a community
  • Having something positive in their lives
  • Getting some work / volunteering experience
  • Gaining a qualification

Jump Start during the COVID-19 Lockdown

During the UK lockdown the priority for the Jump Start team was to be still able to offer support to the young people we work with. We were able to offer them all virtual support weekly catch ups either through video calls, phone calls or messaging. The catch ups were a great opportunity for us to have 1:1 time with individuals from our clubs that previously we were unable to do through the nature of how the clubs operate. This developed into us setting weekly challenges for those that were keen, through videos we did, then encouraging them to video themselves and send back. In addition to this we were able to offer them weekly virtual boxing sessions and a weekly bike maintenance session with partners they were used to as they had been to club before. Each session got young people active and set challenges/practises to have a go at between sessions. This also allowed a smoother transition into 1:1 and small group cycle rides and boxing sessions when government guidance allowed it.

We are now in a position to resume some of our pre COVID-19 offer and our programmes are coming back to fruition slowly. To see the impact our COVID-19 offer had click on the document below and look at the case study we put together for one of the young people in Bridgwater.
