New 'real legacy' Schools in Somerset!

St. James Church School, Redstart Primary School and Cheddar First School

We are delighted to announce that three more Primary Schools in Somerset have become our next 'real legacy' schools in the county.

They have demonstrated a real commitment to the training and development of their staff in both the 'real PE' and 'real gym' programmes so far and with more training and support to come, they really are putting in place a programme that will benefit the schools for many years to come. We look forward to working with them!

'real legacy' is an ambitious two-year programme, personalised for your school to make a real difference and create a real legacy for EVERY child. It combines training and resources in real PE, real gym, real leaders and real play along with resources, in school support and the production of a final impact report to share with your staff, governors and parents.

More information

On Monday 16th September we held a real PE training day at Westlands Entertainment Venue in Yeovil. The day was to introduce new staff from existing real PE schools to the real PE programme. It was also an opportunity for new schools and new staff to find out a bit more about how the real PE approach can significantly impact the staff and children at their school.

real PE is a unique, child-centred programme that will challenge and support EVERY child to form a positive relationship with physical activity. To find out where and when the next real PE training day is and for information on all our upcoming courses, click on the link above.

Primary PE and Sport Funding continues into 2019-20

Since our last newsletter, the government has confirmed that the Primary PE and Sport Funding will continue into the 2019-20 academic year with another £320 million pounds allocated to Primary Schools.

The government have encouraged schools to 'build on the work you have already done using your premium and to ensure that it builds the capacity and capability for all pupils and that what you do now continues to impact upon pupils in the future'.

We are delighted at the commitment shown by the government with the continued funding and have many success stories to share from schools in our area where the funding has made a real difference to the provision of PE and Sport for EVERY child.

Schools can use the premium to secure improvements in the following indicators:

  •   the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  •   the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  •   increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  •   broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  •   increased participation in competitive sport

Many schools are already using the Create and SASP PE, Sport and Health Wheel to track and evidence their previous spending and to set themselves targets for the upcoming year. If you are interested in using the wheel then please email Toni at tsmyth@sasp.co.uk or Mark at mtempleton@sasp.co.uk and we can get you set up!

PE, Sport and Health Wheel

A Fantastic Way to Track Your PE and Sport Premium Spend

Forty five schools in the county so far have been using the PE, Sport and Health Wheel as a tool to track and evidence their PE and Sport Premium spend. If you attended last year's conference you have access to the wheel for FREE until January. Many schools find that there are areas to address as a result of completing their school wheel profiles.

If you are interested in using the PE, Sport and Health Wheel, please email Toni at tsmyth@sasp.co.uk or Mark at mtempleton@sasp.co.uk for further details.

Thank you to Josh from Crowcombe for sharing his wheel.
