Women’s project – ‘In It Together Somerset’ launches new website

The initiative in helping women to gain confidence to be active and move more, now has a new website to make it easier to find activities locally and to make bookings!

The 'In It Together' women's project that was launched in January 2022 has gone from strength to strength providing an array of activities for women across Somerset. From beginners running and self defence to dance and rugby, this programme is showcasing all types of activities and sports for women to try. There are many barriers for women to overcome when it comes to exercise and movement, so it's been important to put together a programme that empowers women to move in their own way, work towards building their self-esteem, and find an outlet that provides healthy coping mechanisms. The result - enriching other aspects of life which could range from going for that job interview to striking up a conversation with a stranger.

The programme is managed by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) and has delivered 36 courses across the County to date. With more and more courses available, and many more planned over the coming months, we are pleased to have launched a new website for the programme. This website will allow women to find out what sessions and courses are going on locally to them and will be assist in making bookings easier. We want to ensure this programme is accessible for all and this new website will help SASP to do this. Please visit: www.inittogethersomerset.co.uk for more detail on activities happening across Somerset during the Summer and Autumn.

One participant from a session said, "It was a good workout without realising you were working, and with great music, dancing and disco lighting. Abi's class was just the right level, so you don't feel overwhelmed or intimidated with complicate moves. Abi was very clear with her instructions in a really fun way".

Courses range from 6 - 10 weeks in duration and are held either indoors or outdoors depending on the activity. All the courses have an exit route for women to continue to be active, either as a group or through individual exercise. It has been great to hear from one group in Wincanton, who started their running journey in January as part of the 'In It together beginners running sessions', during the cold dark evenings, and have continued this weekly activity by working towards completing 70k by June to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. We are looking forward to hearing their progress. All the sessions are led by coaches and instructors who have the same goal; to help break down those barriers that women face, empower them to move in their own way, remove that self-doubt, and most importantly, to enjoy it! The programme also celebrated the Jubilee in style with 20+ women attending a dance event in South Somerset with music from across the decades. Many of the attendees have been attending the FitSteps FAB sessions in Yeovil and working up to this celebration event. There were lots of laughs and giggling through the hour-long session and a touch of fancy dress too.

For more information about sessions near you, please visit the In It Together Somerset website at www.inittogethersomerset.co.uk or visit our Facebook page @InItTogetherSomerset or Instagram and twitter pages @iit_somerset

SASP are working in partnership with Pluss and South Somerset District Council (SSDC) to deliver this programme and the project is funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund and SSDC.
