New lead provider for Physical Activity on Referral scheme

Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) has successfully been awarded the contract to become the new lead provider to co-ordinate and manage a new physical activity on referral service for Somerset over the next three years.

The new Somerset Physical Activity on Referral scheme aims to help people living with long term health conditions to increase their levels of physical activity in a safe and structured environment. The service will provide health screening, advice, and access to exercise, led by highly qualified exercise professionals and sessions will run across Somerset in local leisure and community centres. The service will offer a range of different types of activity and residents will be informed about these in their initial appointment and advised on the most suitable type of activity for them.

Kate Anderson, Public Health Specialist – Health Improvement for Somerset County Council, said "Somerset County Council's Public Health Team have quality assured Exercise on Referral Schemes in the county for many years. Now, more than ever, there is strong evidence for the impact of physical inactivity on an ever-broadening variety of health problems. We look forward to working with SASP and partners in the future to meet our shared vision of expanding the exercise referral programme and supporting more people to physically active and improve their health".

Jake Hannis, Deputy CEO for Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, said, "We are really excited to have been selected to become the lead provider for the new Physical Activity on Referral scheme and this really complements our existing work. This is key aspect of the new strategy for physical activity and sport, Somerset Moves. We want to ensure that ourselves and the providers align with the health priorities for Somerset. In doing this we will aim to strengthen our connections and collaboration with the health system so more people are recommended or referred into activity as part of primary and secondary care services and care pathways".

The new Physical Activity on Referral Scheme, which will be called ProActive, will be launched in June 2022.
