Full of Beans Live - Early Years & Foundation Stage Case Study

Setting up live lessons Countywide...

Reaching out to EYFS

To support children across Somerset during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Early Years team at SASP reached out to the EYFS communities offering them an opportunity to take part in some virtual live physical activity lessons. Being a wide spread and rural county a virtual offer was an excellent opportunity to promote the importance of physical development and help the young children foster positive relationships with physical activity on a larger scale. With an average of 850 children taking part in the sessions each week, SASP were able to interact with more children than we ever could face to face at one time. Childminders, Nurseries, Pre-Schools, Play groups and Foundation classes all took part in the sessions, tuning in on electronic whiteboards, TVs, tablets and other smart devices from their location.

Delivering Live Lessons

The Full of Beans sessions themselves were hosted at the SASP offices via Zoom across a 4-week period building up to the finale just before the Christmas break. EYFS settings were asked to register their interest in the sessions so we were able to provide an appropriate safeguarded platform for settings to tune into each week. Each 30-minute session followed a theme including;

  • Trekking through the jungle
  • Diving into the deep blue sea
  • blasting off into space
  • A Christmas jingle

All the sessions had a simple aim of increasing activity levels of children in EYFS and providing a bank of physical activity ideas to EYFS practitioners to re-use in the future.

To further increase the chances of these sessions having a larger impact they were recorded and uploaded to the SASP YouTube channel. After each week these links were shared with all of the settings taking part so that they could in turn share with their own families so children could take part at home again if they wanted to, or settings could re run the sessions at their own leisure.

"Thank you so much for the last 4 weeks, our children have engaged well and really enjoyed the sessions. I have emailed the You Tube links out to parents so they can get involved too. Thank you so much for these sessions: the children have really looked forward to them."

"Thank you so much for this. Our Children really enjoyed these sessions and we will look forward to the ones in the Spring."
