SASP's Return to Sport Update August
Posted: Thu, 06 Aug 2020 16:18
It is with delight that SASP can announce that we now have face to face delivery returning across the county for many of our programmes. However this is still proving an extremely challenging time for us and our sector and we continue to be concerned about the short, medium and longer term effects on sport, leisure and physical activity provision.
In this update lets celebrate some of the programmes that SASP has brought back to provide fun, social and importantly safe, Covid-19 risk assessed activity for different members of our community to enjoy.
Children and Young People
After so much virtual content young people have been voting with their feet about getting back to some face to face delivery.
Jump Start – holiday activities have started with a trip to Halden forest and more adventures are planned throughout the summer on the water with Channel Adventures and off-road cycling. Thank you to Somerset County Council and Sedgemoor District Council and Children in Need for supporting us throughout this challenging time to enable us to provide additional support to many of these young people.
Disability – holiday activities have flown off the shelf and filled in 24 hours of being advertised. We are presently trying to find funding for further activities. On the water, tree climbing and other adventures are planned throughout the summer alongside continuing with some of our virtual offer.
Health Walks – SASP health walks in Mendip and West Somerset are back. We are working with the organisations who deliver health walks across the rest of the county to support them to bring back theirs too. The walks are proving very popular as ever and so lovely to have walkers together again after some of the isolation we have seen during lockdown. More info here.
The Beach Wellness – The Beach fitness classes have returned in Minehead. We now have 7 face to face normal classes operating at The Beach Hotel. They are a sell out so we hope to extend this provision is possible. The gym itself will be returning on the week beginning 17th August with bookable sessions. More info here.
Active Spaces – This outdoor fitness class programme has had some great feedback and interest where it has returned in West Somerset. Please see the Facebook Page or website. Thank you to EDF who fund this programme.
Revive – Delivery with our housed rough sleepers started at the end of July and is proving very popular. Work in Burnham, Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead is on going with the rest of the county added over the coming weeks. A huge thank you to PLUSS for their support with this work.
Adult Rounders - August will see a new social distanced form of rounders with a maximum of 10 teams (instead of our usual 24) in Taunton for a 4 week season and Yeovil soon to follow.
Teacher Training in child centred PE will be back from September both virtually and face to face depending upon the school and the facilities they can offer. We have worked hard to support schools throughout the lockdown and are looking forward to supporting them again with longer term solutions.
Swimming – Both Learn to Swim, and curriculum swimming are returning at Quantock Lodge in September. It won't be the same as it was before with the new guidance. However, we can't wait to get going again.
We have learnt so much since lockdown at the end of March 2020 and will be keeping some of the valuable virtual delivery including courses, training and networks that we have created that have made it easier for many people to be included. However, nothing beats face to face physical activity and sport delivery; getting out in the fresh air with new and old friends to make us feel energised and positive about life. So as for everyone a new hybrid of virtual and face to face will stay into the coming years.
A final thank you to all our partners for their unstinting positivity, support and flexibility through these continuing challenging times. We have and continue to work hard to increase the numbers of people in Somerset who are physically active in ways that work for them and we could not do that without you. We know that fitness is so important in the recovery phase from Covid-19 and it is with renewed purpose that we continue to make this message a practical reality for as many people as possible.
