Somerset Schools take up One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge for BBC Children in Need

Youngsters from Somerset Schools are taking up the challenge to get moving this November to raise money for BBC Children in Need by supporting the One Show's Rickshaw Challenge.

Organised by Somerset Activity Sports Partnership (SASP) School Games programme, more than 30 schools and over 4,000 pupils will be getting active during BBC Children in Need Week (12-16 November).

The county's success in motivating its youngsters has achieved national recognition with SASP team leader Nancy Murdoch appearing on the BBC's One Show tonight (7 November).

Somerset schools will be encouraging their youngsters to get active and contribute to the 423 mile rickshaw virtual challenge. This can be done as a whole school or as house/inter tutor or within lesson competitions. Teams can count the distance to walk/scoot/bike to school or by completing their daily mile during their school day or even as a fitness suite challenge using gym bikes/treadmill/etc.

Jane Knowles, CEO of SASP says, "We are delighted that schools that take part in the Somerset School Games are now helping their youngsters keep motivated and active by taking part in the Rickshaw Challenge. We are excited to see just how many children in Somerset get active, work together as a team, and achieve something amazing for BBC Children in Need."

Josh Wedderkopp of Crowcombe & Stogumber CofE Primary Schools & Milverton Community Primary School said, "The Rickshaw Challenge has really ignited the children. I've had child after child telling me about the walking, running, cycling and swimming that they're planning with their families.

The curriculum is so pressured so we're opening the school early so the kids can run before lessons, the young leaders are monitoring the runners at lunchtimes and we'll use PE lessons too. We're only a little school of about 100 pupils but we've set ourselves a personal challenge to travel our age in miles over the week!"

SASP staff member Nancy will be appearing on The One Show tonight (7 November) to showcase the amazing work Somerset schools are doing over the next week to raise money for Children in Need. She says, "There's still time for more schools to sign up to support this fantastic cause, and help raise even more money. If you're interested in taking part, just contact us at SASP and we can help you get started."
