Early Healthy Futures & Milverton Pre-School

Milverton is a vibrant pre-school situated within the grounds of Milverton Community Primary School. The pre-school manager Charlotte was keen to offer the sessions to families attending the pre-school, due to her attending one of the Early Healthy Futures workshops based at the SASP offices.
Letters were sent out to the parents/carers offering the sessions over a four week period and she was very pleased with the response from the families: "I can confirm I've currently had 18 return slips for the session on Monday and a few extra who are booked in whose parents can't attend so they will be staff members!"
For our second session, we had 24 children and around 12 parents/families. The session also included a break in the middle, which allowed parents and children to enjoy some fruit, water and an opportunity to socialise with and build good relationships with the pre-school.
"It's great getting everyone active and having fun together". "They're engaging and inspiring to do with your own children." - Various adults who attended the sessions

During the sessions, families took part in a number of different activities that required both parent/carer to be active and take part. The activities had a child focus of physical fundamental skills developing (ABC's, fine and gross motor skills related to school readiness).
Each session was based on a creative idea e.g. going into space, pirates, animals and many more. The opportunity to also practice colours, counting, taking turns, positive parenting and building relationships all contributed to school readiness as the sessions were held at the school.
As well as a physical and creative focus, there was also simple healthy living messages passed onto parents/carers such as healthy snacks, being active at home and eating more fruit and vegetables to continue learning.
We hope that this can become an ongoing routine for the staff and families to deliver more sessions which make for great practice in supporting early year's development.
