Childminders Conference - 'Healthy Movers'
On Saturday 8th February, the SASP Early Years Team attended the Childminders Conference to deliver a workshop called 'Healthy Movers'. We were given the opportunity to network with childminders across Somerset. Our workshop was a great success with some brilliant feedback. The workshop was created to link to the theme of the conference to help young children in the EYFS to become "Curious and Confident Communicators" through physical activity. We are currently working with delegates from the conference to increase activity levels across Somerset.
Bridgwater College Level 3 Students
The SASP early years team delivered a "Full of Beanz" workshop to the students at BW college to share the importance of physical activity in Early Years. The students experienced a range of activity ideas and the chance to share best practice from their current experiences. We now have a link with a local setting near the college to do some more training with Early Years children and the students so they can implement ideas from the workshop.
New Early Years Settings 'Full Of Beanz'
Off the back of our most recent workshops we created lots of new links with settings across Somerset. Some of our new contacts where we have started to deliver Full of Beanz sessions are:
- Dunster Pre School
- Toybox Nursery Yeovil
- Churchfield Church School Reception class
These settings have so far taken part in 'Full of Beanz' sessions where the children have worked on their physical development skills. Our aims for Full of Beans sessions are to support settings with new ideas to help children 1 – 5 years old achieve 180 minutes of physical activity each day through a structured session or interventions.
Physical Activity Audit Success
Congratulations to the Olive Tree Nursery and West Over Little Stars Pre School for successfully completing out our Early Years Physical Activity Audit! Both of these settings have shown us some great evidence and a great understanding of the importance of PA for their EY children. Keep up the great work! If your setting is interested in taking part in our physical activity audit or want some more information, please click here or email the SASP Early Years team so we can send across the introduction pack.

EYPA Group
Our Early Years group met once again at the end of February for another successful and informative meeting. Main topics on our agenda were Intergenerational updates, Sugar Smart updates from SCC, Family Funs training feedback, Physical Activity audit and a new project that SASP/SCC are about to take part in with Bristol University around EY. If you would like to become a part of our Early Years group, please drop Dan or Stuart an email.
Intergenerational Work
10 settings are taking place in our new project around intergenerational work where Early Years children & staff come to residential homes with the SASP EY team to take part in chair based physical activity. Our product for this is called Golden Age Olympics which we have adapted to suit young children as well as the elderly. The feedback has been fantastic so far and the social, personal and physical benefits for all involved have been great!
