FAQs
Any Spaces?
Please contact us by phone or email to discuss availability to suit you.
How long are the lessons?
All our lessons, from Beginners to Academy are 1/2 hr long.
How many children are in a class?
We allocate up to 6 spaces in Bubbles 1 and Bubbles 2, and up to 6 places in Splashes 1 and above. Academy is swum in lanes and taught as one large group, and we allocate up to 25 swimmers across 5 lanes.
Do I go in the water with my child?
No, there are bench seats poolside, where you will be able to see and hear what is happening. For our beginner swimmers, groups are kept small and the teacher is in the water with them.
Do I need to bring flotation aids?
We have arm discs and woggles, which are used as required for assistance with flotation, or develop a particular skill. Some children prefer using their own familiar armbands.
I have more than 1 child. Can they swim at the same time?
As our class size is small, we have a number of different ability groups in the pool at the same time. We always try to place siblings in lessons at the same time. Any occasion we can't, we look to place them in back to back sessions, with a view to move to the same time as soon as possible.
What do I need to bring?
Swimming Costume / Shorts (not long shorts, they reduce feel for the water and are heavy when wet). Goggles (see separate FAQ), towel, shampoo/soap as showers are available. Swim nappies if your child is not ready to let you know they need to go!
Do I need to wear a hat?
No, you don't have to, but may be worth it for longer hair. Hair that gets in the eyes when swimming should be tied back.
Goggles - yes or no?
It's a swimmers choice. Once your child is getting comfortable putting their face in and having a look around underwater, they will find it easier to see eg. objects to pick up, and goggles will help reduce eye irritation, but consider whether your child will be distracted by them instead of focussing on the session. We would expect children in groups minnows and above to be wearing goggles. Find a pair that are comfortable and don't leak.
How long is a term?
We follow the Somerset County Council School Terms and Holidays Academic Year whenever possible, which means one term may be longer or shorter than the next.
When do your Holiday Courses run?
We currently run holiday courses from our Minehead Swim School venue at the start of the Summer Holidays. Please see the holiday course page on this website for further information or call the office.
When do you award swim badges and certificates?
We continually assess our swimmers during their lessons and award ASA badges and certificates when they have completed a stage or achieved a distance. The time taken to achieve an award can vary between individuals.
Once an award has been achieved your child will receive a slip with the details on where to order them. This can be done online and paid for through our website.
If my child is ill or misses a session do I receive a credit or alternative session to attend?
It is SASP policy for fees to be charged for sessions that are unattended by a swimmer unless cancelled by SASP, Quantock Lodge in Nether Stowey, or St Michael's & Butlins in Minehead.
Exceptions would be for long term illnesses and injuries and at SASP's discretion.
We are unable to credit or refund for short term illnesses eg. Colds, chicken pox, or prior engagements eg. Birthday parties, days out.
Quantock Lodge Swim School may be able to facilitate this only if space is available and at the discretion of the Lead Teacher, Amy. Please contact her should the need arise.
Can I swim if I have a verruca?
A Verruca will not normally stop you swimming. Here is the current advice from the Swim England website, who discuss verrucas and the pool environment, and what to do if verrucas are causing problems for you.
