What is Netball?
Traditionally, Netball is a ball sport played by two teams of seven players. Games are played on a rectangular court with raised goal rings at each end.
The object is to score goals from within a defined area, by throwing a ball into a ring attached to a 3.05 metres (10 feet) high post.
Players are assigned specific positions (such as Goal Shooter, or Centre), which define their roles within the team and restricts their movement to certain areas of the court.
During general play, a player with the ball can hold onto it for only three seconds before shooting for a goal or passing to another player.
The winning team is the one that scores the most goals within the pre-defined time of play.
There are also variations to the traditional 7-a-side game these include:
Nets is a variation of netball that is fast, non-stop and very tactical. Although there are similarities with the rules of standard 7-a-Side netball, there are a number of differences as well. The first, and most obvious of these is that the game is played within an enclosed high tension cage, or 'nets', so the ball never goes out. The second difference to note is that there are three variations of Nets;
- · 5's –5 players on court
- · 6's –6 players on court
- · 7's –7 players on court
For each variation there is a women's and a mixed team version.
Fast5 (previously known as FastNet) is a variation of netball featuring shortened games and goals worth multiple points. Each side only has five players on the court, quarter's lasts only six minutes and rolling substitutions can be made.
