Squash is a relatively new experience for most Primary School age children but once they try it they are hooked!
With the new Unsquashable Mini Squash Programme, squash can be delivered in a Primary school setting, whether it is in a sports hall or a dining hall.
With 3 levels of award: red, orange and green the activities are progressive and fun and linked to the National Curriculum. There are even passports and stamps to keep momentum. Along with the activities there is special equipment, different size rackets to suit every age and ability and even a rebound wall to help get over the ‘wall space’ issue.
Our newly appointed Multi Skills and Squash Coach Matt Baker is making links with a number of Primary Schools in the county, firstly delivering some school based activity, then onto festivals (at either the school or club) and then on to after school clubs and established squash clubs. |
Secondary Schools
Somerset benefits from having a number of squash courts on school sites and County Development officer Matt is keen to increase the links between schools and the existing clubs.
Teachers Awards and CSLA Awards are available through England Squash – see website link below.
Clubs
England Squash run a very successful club accreditation scheme in line with Sport England’s Club Mark. There are currently five clubs in the county holding a Club Charter Award including a gold standard in Wellington (based at the Leisure Centre) Any schools work is expected to link with a Charter Club and where there are none, the club is advised and supported to work to the scheme.
There are currently approximately 12 squash clubs with active junior sections in Somerset.
