  Tackling Rugby in Somerset


Primary Schools Links

There is a thriving primary school programme taking place in all areas of the county. Almost every school has experienced tag rugby. Running, passing and fun are the main elements of this non-contact version of the game. The game is instant to play and easily administered. Many festivals are held around the county and even leagues, for those who wish to be involved.

Secondary School Links


Rugby is one of the main sports played in schools throughout Somerset. The county has deep rooted traditions in the game and Somerset lead the way in rugby development.

Clubs

There are 40 Rugby Clubs in Somerset who run a junior section for those players, boys and girls who wish to enjoy a club environment. Every club in the county have the opportunity to work toward the RFU and Sport England Seal of Approval Award for clubs who meet the national criteria for high standards of management and application. This scheme constantly monitors the quality of experience provided by the club for its members and visitors.


Sports Colleges


The Sports Colleges in the county have active rugby links with all schools in their clusters. In conjunction with the coaches and local clubs there is every opportunity for young people to become involved in the game where England Champion the World.

Representative Opportunities:- The Somerset County RFU Ltd begin the representative ladder at under 14 with district squads that lead into the under 15 county development programme and the renowned Super6 floodlit Competition. The county then run representative squads at every age group up to and including the full adult county Team.

Coaching

The Rugby Football Union runs a comprehensive coach training programme. Those coaches under 16 years of age can take the Community Sports Leader Award in Rugby. There is a special course for delivering Tag Rugby and includes many generic games using tags.

The Level 1 course and onward are linked to the National UK Coaching Certification courses and recognised as an industry qualification throughout the UK.
