The 2017 Somerset Sports Awards will give recognition to the achievements and successes of outstanding athletes, inspirational volunteers, great coaches and quality clubs and organisations from across Somerset.
The awards evening for the finalists will be held on Friday 16th June 2017 at Taunton Rugby Club and will be hosted by Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership with support from The Rotary Club of Taunton Vale and TS5C.

Nomination Categories and Criteria
- Young Coach of the Year - sponsored by Richard Huish College
For a young individual who has demonstrated their commitment and passion through coaching in sport or physical activity. This young person will be seen as an inspiration within their role as a coach and have made a positive impact on those they have coached. Please note that they must be Under 21 as of 31/07/17.
- Children's Coach of the Year - sponsored by Bridgwater & Taunton College
In recognition of a coach who coaches young people under the age of 16 and shows a high level of dedication and ability through innovative practice. This coach shows evidence of the development of basic skills through fun in sport or physical activity, appropriate player-centred engagement and high quality coaching.
- Participation Coach of the Year - sponsored by SS&L
In recognition of a coach who shows an outstanding contribution to getting more people starting, staying and succeeding in sport or physical activity through high quality coaching. This coach will show evidence of widening access to sport or physical activity and may work in a specific community or area of low participation.
- Performance Coach of the Year - sponsored by Tony Pryce Sports
In recognition of the achievements of a coach who shows dedication and outstanding ability to support player centred, high quality, innovative coaching which encourages the development of individuals and/or teams within sport or physical activity and nurtures talent.
- Young Volunteer of the Year
In recognition of an individual under the age of 21 who has shown dedication, commitment and service to sport or physical activity across Somerset. Please note that they must be Under 21 as of 31/07/17.
- Club Volunteer of the Year - sponsored by Apsleys
In recognition of an individual volunteer who has shown dedication, commitment and service to sport or physical activity within the community in Somerset.
- Club of the Year – sponsored by The Rotary Club of Taunton Vale
In recognition of a club who has shown significant development over the year through increasing opportunities, developing its workforce and/or gaining or maintaining accreditation.
- Get Somerset Active – sponsored by Sportivate
In recognition of a person or project that have inspired, motivated and supported people within Somerset, through informal or formal sport or physical activity. This person or project will have been a driving force in getting more people participating in sport or physical activity and made a real difference.
- Primary PE and Sport Premium
To recognise a school that has innovated and endeavoured to provide improved outcomes for pupils using the Primary PE and Sport Premium grant. This could be through; pupil engagement in physical activity, health and wellbeing; whole school improvement; up-skilling staff; broader sporting experience or increased participation competitive sport. Schools must evidence how their activity is sustainable.
- Contribution to School or College Sport Award - sponsored by Albert Goodman
Designed to reward someone who has increased the profile, participation and/or awareness of school or college sport in Somerset. The nominee may be involved in school or college sport at any level within Somerset.
- Active Workplace Award
In recognition of a workplace in Somerset that has adopted a positive approach towards the health and wellbeing of its employees.
- This Girl Can Award
In recognition of a woman/women that has encompassed the national campaign, overcoming the fear of judgement and doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their faces get.
- TS5C Young Sportsperson of the Year – sponsored by TS5C
TS5C is a Somerset charity which sponsors talented young sports performers in Somerset. The award will be made to their highest achiever in 2015/16. Please note this is a closed award and we do not accept nominations for it.
- Sports Performer of the Year - sponsored by Bridgwater & Taunton College
In recognition of an outstanding performer who has achieved national or international success in their chosen sport.
Nominees must live, volunteer, coach or deliver sport in Somerset. The 'Year' constitutes delivery between 1st April 2016 – 31st March 2017.
