Aims of the project


To raise the self- esteem, confidence and overall activity levels in children age 4 – 11
To provide opportunities for all youngsters to achieve their best in physical activity
To support teachers in their delivery of QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority) PE and Sport Schemes of Work
To provide opportunities for teachers to identify children lacking basic co-ordination skills and provide differentiated activities to support these children.

Delivery of Project

A coach trained to deliver a multi-skilled programme will spend a day a week in each school working with the same children and teachers each week.

The coach will take each class for their PE / Sport lesson (helpful if a minimum of 30 minutes activity time) -ALONGSIDE the class teacher. The Coach will work to a carefully structured scheme of work linking to national curriculum outcomes.

Acquiring and developing skills
Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas
Evaluating and improving performance
Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health

The project is particularly targeted at the younger children but KS2 classes can be involved if time in the day allows.

During the autumn term an Occupational Therapist will visit each school to discuss with teachers early identification of children with any co-ordination problems and suggest a programme to overcome them.

By the end of the autumn term the class teacher will have undertaken an assessment of the children’s skills

School staff will identify children lacking the basic co-ordination skills.

A Co-ordination group will be established during the spring term for identified children, Follow up consultations with parents and Occupational Therapists if necessary, will be instigated and led by school staff

The Coaches

The coaches have been specifically identified and trained for this project

Minimum Operating standards

In particular:

CRB checked
Child Protection and awareness trained
Level 2 NGB qualification (working with large groups, progressive and differentiated sessions etc)
Specific training for this project
Child development
Early physical literacy skills (running, jumping, climbing balancing, throwing, catching etc)

Commitment by school

Facilities available each week
Class teacher always in attendance and has overall responsibility for the children.
Coach informed ASAP of any special school activities, which will affect sessions (Harvest Festival, Christmas activities)
Coach part of school staff? (break / lunch times etc?)

Communication

Leaflet for teachers/ parents
Attend staff meeting early in autumn term
Coach to visit school week beginning September
Co-ordinator to visit school and coach in November
