Rugby Scrum

There are many opportunities for men, women and children to participate in a variety of rugby activities in Somerset. From the traditional 15-aside contact game played in all of the 55 rugby clubs in Somerset, to Tag rugby for primary school children, to Touch rugby for anyone and everyone!

There are also many opportunities to get involved with rugby off the pitch. Perhaps you are a retired player who still enjoys spectating or you simply want to build your C.V for career purposes, volunteering in a rugby club can be highly rewarding. There are coaching and refereeing courses held across the county throughout the year. The RFU also offer leadership and volunteering training for volunteers to enhance their ability to develop rugby in their local community. If you are interested the best thing is simply to turn up to your local club and express an interest.

Women and Girls rugby is growing across the country partly due to England hosting the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010. Somerset is doing its part to grow tomorrow’s stars with 3 of the current Elite 44 having come from the county. There are established teams at Hornets RFC, Weston-Super-Mare and in N.Somerset at Old Reds RFC. There are also girls sections at Yatton RFC and Ivel RFC. Even if these don’t sound too near to you and your children never fear as there are always new sections springing up and so please enquire if you are keen to try the sport.

Touch rugby is also growing in the county because it is very easy to play and open to everyone. Touch is a variant form of rugby and is played on a smaller pitch, with smaller numbers and over a shorter time. It is frequently mixed and played after work on a week night or over a day’s weekend tournament similar to 7s. There is a Summer Parents League for all parents of junior players at Keynsham RFC and in Clevedon the rugby club have opened their doors to the community and are holding social pitch-up-and-play touch weekly at their club. If you would be keen to try Touch please contact your local club or one of the RFU staff below.

You can contact your local RFU staff member for any rugby-related information – where to find a club, rules & regulations, starting to coach or referee, events near you, touch/tag rugby etc.
