DASH was re-launched in September 2010 as DASH 2 and is progressing well. It now has a dedicated team of 4 DASH Coordinators who have strengthened delivery and communication between schools and the DASH team.
DASH 2 is an intervention designed to primarily increase physical activity levels but also aims to achieve and maintain healthy weight and improve and maintain healthy eating habits. Taking part in physical activity through DASH builds self-esteem, self-confidence and plays a crucial role in promoting a healthier lifestyle.
The DASH team have been working hard to get new schools taking up DASH 2 and to also get families involved in the project. Through family breakfasts and different themed sessions they are now starting to engage more parents.
At Halcon DASH before Christmas they had a bush tucker breakfast trial where they all wore blind folds and tried different types of foods that they had not tried before, such as alligator blood (smoothies), crocodile insides (muesli and yoghurt) and dragon slugs (dragon fruit). The children really enjoyed it did very well at trying new and healthy foods.
The children at Hamp DASH are busy creating a DASH notice board with photos of what they have been doing and sentences about what they enjoy about DASH so that the rest of the school and any visitors to the school know what it is all about.
