Golf

Golf has, for the first time, been identified as one of the top ten sports in England and it is hoped that, with the successful implementation of the Whole Sport Plan, there will be some important changes to English Golf. To achieve success and ensure effective delivery there will be a new "ONE VOICE" structure that embraces men, women, professional, amateur, the able-bodied and disabled.

The formation of the England Golf Partnership brought together the National Governing Bodies of Golf in England and it was appropriate that this should be mirrored at a local level in the form of County Golf Partnerships. As a consequence of this the Somerset Golf Union, Somerset Ladies County Golf Association and the Somerset PGA jointly decided to formulate an application and after the compilation, submission and acceptance of budgets and development plans, the Somerset County Golf Partnership was formed in 2007.

The Partnership was formally launched at two sites, Farrington Golf Club and Taunton Vale Golf Club, with invites to all clubs in the County. 70% of the Counties clubs were represented and all agreed that SCGP could offer much needed help in the recruitment and retention of members across the range, men, ladies, boys and girls, able bodied and disabled.

It’s never been easier to Get into golf

There’s no better sport for bringing people together and, with its winning combination of exercise, sporting skill and social interaction, golf is the perfect tonic for good health and happiness.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played golf or haven’t picked up a club since your school days or an almost-forgotten holiday. You can get started by taking advantage of the low cost taster sessions and beginner courses on offer across the county.

The Get into golf campaign is run by the England Golf Partnership (EGP) through its network of County Golf Partnerships. The EGP brings together the amateur governing body, England Golf, and the Professional Golfers’ Association and works to grow the game with the support of the Golf Foundation.

You’ll receive a basic introduction to golf from PGA professionals, together with information about club membership and follow-on coaching opportunities. Equipment will be provided so all you have to do is turn up on the day in comfortable clothing.

Research now shows that this increasingly popular sport is actually a powerhouse of all the core ingredients that doctors recommend for optimum physical and mental health and wellbeing.  Here’s how…

It’s better than a fast and furious gym session
Research shows that walking around the golf course for a few hours is healthier than an intense session at the gym.

It keeps you healthy

Playing a full 18 holes burns up to 900 calories as well as working your heart and lungs.

It helps combat stress

Playing in the fresh air and green spaces can help reduce your stress levels.
